"[Jesus] said, "To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade." (Mark 3:30-32)
Monday was a snow day and I had an opportunity to paint with my granddaughter, the middle one this time. I started by painting one little dot representing the mustard seed. I worked from the bottom up and this image evolved. (I painted in on regular copy paper. The ripples occurred as I scanned it.) The dot in the center of what became the trunk, is simply the heart of the tree, the potential of the seed. The seed itself is way at the bottom, giving itself to the hummus of the earth, called forth and transformed by the power of God.
Creator of the Cosmos and the mustard seed, help us to ponder the transformative power of your love in our lives. May we always remain in awe of the mystery of this power and give ourselves over to it so that we may know the fullness of joy with which we were created and be bearers of your joyful love to the world. Amen.
